Happy Animals, Great Cheese!
A spotlight on Nettle Meadow Farm and Artisan Cheese

Nettle Meadow Farm has gained quite a following among cheese lovers since its founding in 1990.  Many of their artisan cheeses have won prestigious awards, illuminating the practiced skill in production and the deliciousness of their products.  Just last year Nettle Meadow brought home two gold medals from the World Cheese Championship in Wisconsin. The famous triple crème Kunik cheese was awarded the gold medal in the mixed milk bloomy rinds category, and the Apple Cider Fromage Frais received gold in the mixed milk spreadable cheese category. Check out their website to see more praise on specific cheeses, including links to articles in New York Magazine and Culture Magazine which describes the Kunik as an “American Original,” as well as many other mentions in the press.  So what is it that makes Nettle Meadow cheese so special and world renown? Let’s find out!
Nettle Meadow is located in beautiful Thurman, NY, just below Crane Mountain in the Adirondacks.  It is owned and operated by Lorraine Lambiase and Sheila Flanagan who are dedicated to the many animals on the farm and sanctuary as well as making award winning cheeses for everyone to enjoy. Nettle Meadow is home to over 300 goats, dozens of sheep, several guard llamas, and a variety of sanctuary farm animals. The animals have plenty of room to graze and play and are housed in eight large barns and outbuildings. These include both a new barn and a historic barn built in 1903 and restored in 2013. The dairy herd enjoys a balanced nutritious diet of natural ingredients including hay, grains, varying wild herbs, raspberry leaf, garlic, and kelp. Nettle Meadow is committed to the principles of natural ingredients. This healthy diet adds great flavor to the milk the goats and sheep produce; happy animals produce great cheese!
Lorraine and Sheila also run the Kemp Sanctuary connected to the farm. When members of the dairy herd reach old age they are moved to the sanctuary where they enjoy their much earned retirement along with rescued farm animals. The Kemp Sanctuary houses many animals including fowl, horses, and retired members of the dairy herd.  Nettle Meadow recently set up a new property, just a few minutes up the road, known as the Nursery. This is where the young kids and lambs are nurtured and grow up together before they are ready to join the dairy herd. The farmers at Nettle Meadow farm are committed to ensuring that the animals receive the best care from the Nursery all the way to retirement at the Kemp Sanctuary.
When you buy an artisanal Nettle Meadow cheese you can feel confident that you are supporting the rich and full lives of the animals who give so much as well as the trusted and talented farmers and cheese makers. The farm has an open philosophy allowing people to visit and tour the farm and even rent a cabin and spend the night at the beautiful property. At Lewis Waite we offer a variety of semi-soft, soft, and spreadable cheeses for you to enjoy.
